MAY/JUNE 2022:

 

 

Grades K-5 Physical Education: Spring has finally arrived and May and June will be months filled with lots of activities and fun. In the month of May, the students will be finishing up their volleyball unit and beginning a new unit - I am so excited about Pickleball! The students will be introduced to this fun and very popular game using their striking and serving skills along with eye hand coordination and agility. The students will be working in small groups while participating in this fun unit. In addition to Pickleball, towards the end of the month the students will be working on Field Day Activities and games! Our Field Day is scheduled for Friday May 27, 2022 with a rain date of Friday June 3, 2022. Permission slips will be going home soon and if you'd like to volunteer to help out, please make sure you complete the application to become an approved volunteer through the Cranston Public Schools. In the month of June, the students will be working on our last spring sport unit of the school year, baseball/kickball. The students will be working on their throwing and catching skills, along with batting and base running skills. Hopefully the weather cooperates and we can spend lots of time outdoors.

 

Grades K-5 Health Classes: In the months of May and June, health topics will include social and emotional learning, sun safety, water safety, allergies and bicycle safety.

APRIL 2022:

 

 

Grades K-5: April brings in spring and hopefully nice warmer weather. The students will be finishing up their pillow polo unit in grades K-3 and floor hockey for grades 4-5 will come to an end. Spring sports will begin this month and our first unit will be volleyball! K-2 students will be introduced to striking skills and volley skills while working individually and in small groups. Grades 3-5 students will also be working on striking skills, bumping and setting skills and volleyball placement skills along with practicing modified volleyball games. There will be lots of balloons and beach balls flying around the gym!


Health Classes: In the month of April, the students will continue to study and explore the topic of nutrition.The students will be able to understand and identify the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) My Plate guidelines for nutritious, well balanced healthy meals The MyPlate dietary guidelines emphasize the 5 food groups and the important nutrients that each food group provides.The students will explore what a healthy plate of food looks like while studying the nutrients and why they are important for us.They will also explore Go, Slow and Whoa foods and why labeling these foods is so important for our overall health.The students will understand why eating a variety of healthy foods will help boost their overall health today and over the course of their lifetime.

 

 

MARCH 2022:

 

 

Grades K-3: March is going to be another very busy and exciting month in PE/Health. In physical education classes the students will be exploring more activities involving spatial awareness and pathways. The students will also be focusing on mastering loco-motor movements such as skipping, hopping, galloping, leaping and slide stepping. Also in this month the students will be participating in a unit of pillow polo which is a lead up activity for floor hockey skills. They will get to work together on teams while practicing the skills necessary to participate in this unit.

 

Grades 4-5: The students in these grades will be exploring more spatial awareness activities and pathways, along with displaying mastery of basic loco-motor skills. Along with these activities, the students will be participating in a floor hockey unit. The students will first be introduced to many skills and drills with lots of practice before they take part in mini game play. They will have opportunities to work together on teams while practicing their new skills.

 

Health Classes K-5: In the month of March the students in all grades will continue to explore the body systems. Some of the systems studied will include respiratory, immune, nervous and digestive. KidsHealth.org How the Body Works will be our primary resource for this unit. March is also national nutrition month! So the students in all grades will start a long unit exploring and studying many aspects of nutrition and how it directly relates to living a healthy lifestyle.

FEBRUARY 2022:

 

 

PE Classes Grades k-5: I am very happy to announce that in the month of February, The American Heart Association Kids Heart Challenge is coming back! The students will be participating in a jump rope unit throughout the month along with our big fundraising event, The Kids Heart Challenge, the week of February 14th. This event will be lots of fun for all involved with the students practicing their jump rope skills and learning new skills to enjoy. Plus it is a great opportunity for the students to participate in raising money and awareness for a great cause. Also in this month the students will be participating in some fun winter olympic themed PE activities!



Health Classes Grades k-5: February is National Heart Health Month so all grades will be studying heart healthy topics such as the anatomy of the heart, ways to keep our hearts healthy and strong, and heart diseases and preventions.

 

 

Kids Heart Challenge Materials will be sent home soon.

 

 

DECEMBER 2021/JANUARY 2022:

 

Grades K-2: The students will continue to work on spatial awareness activities using gross motor movements while participating in various activities. The students will also continue their work on loco-motor movements while exploring space and participating in many activities. Throwing and catching skills will continue to be the primary focus during the month of December along with participating in various holiday themed activities. In January the students will begin their basketball skills unit along with being introduced to working in fitness stations.

 

Health classes: The students will be studying topics such as personal hygiene, the importance of sleep, and disease control and prevention.

 

Grades 3-5: The students will continue to work on spatial awareness activities using gross motor movements while participating in various activities. Throwing and catching skills will continue to be the primary focus during the month of December along with participating in various holiday themed activities. In the month of January the students will begin their basketball skills unit along with being reintroduced to working in fitness stations.

 

Health classes: The students will be studying topics such as personal hygiene, the health triangle, the importance of sleep, and disease control and prevention.

NOVEMBER 2021:

 

Grades K-2: The students continue to work on following directions using both verbal and music cues while exploring movement. Students will continue to work on spatial awareness and movement education while participating in many activities. The main focus in the month of November will be throwing and catching skills. Students will learn how to properly throw underhand and overhand along with tossing and catching various objects. The students will also be working on their cardiovascular endurance and agility.

 

Grades K-2 Health Classes: The students will be studying topics such as stranger danger, personal hygiene and disease control and prevention.

 

Grades 3-5: The students will continue to work on following directions using both verbal and music cues while exploring movement. The students will also have to complete many movement tasks in a set amount of time, so the concept of timers will be introduced. The students will be introduced to the main components of physical fitness such as cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and agility. The main focus in the month of November will be throwing and catching skills along with cooperative games. The students will be reintroduced to underhand throwing, overhand throwing, tossing and catching. All of these skills will be practiced in many activities along with adding movement to them. Grades 4-5 will participate in a short tag football unit with many chances to master these skills.


Grades 3-5 Health Classes: The students will be studying topics such as stranger danger, personal hygiene, disease control and prevention, and exploring the human body and its systems.

 

 

 

OCTOBER 2021:

 

Grades K-2 Physical Education Classes - Students are working on following directions and expectations while listening to verbal cues and music cues. The main focus with the younger students will be spatial awareness and movement education activities. In the month of October, students will be participating in their first fall sport skills unit which will be soccer! Health classes began with the students getting their vision checked and creating their own health folders. Other topics we will study this month will be school bus safety, personal hygiene, fire safety, stranger danger and Halloween safety.


Grades 3-5 Physical Education Classes - Students are working on following directions and expectations along with participating in a cooperative games unit. The students have been working in small groups while participating in many physical challenges that foster teamwork and cooperation. In the month of October, students will be participating in their first fall sport skills unit which will be soccer! Health classes began with the students getting their vision checked and creating their own health folders. Some topics the students will study this month will be school bus safety, personal hygiene, fire safety, stranger danger, Halloween safety and navigating through google workspace using different platforms and using google classrooms.

 

We are off to a great start to the school year in PE/Health!
